Boot to desktop in four steps

Download the ISO
Grab the live image - about 1.6 GB, nothing else needed.

Write it to a USB stick
sudo dd if=novalinux...iso of=/dev/sdX bs=4M status=progress

Boot and pick a desktop
Choose from the GRUB menu or the live picker. It installs what you pick into RAM.

Run the installer
sudo nova-install - answer the wizard, and you're done. Auto-login and your boot desktop are set up for you.
